The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming: A Christmas Story
As I packed my suitcase before returning to college, I didn't forget to pack a few mementos just because. One of the few things I brought with me is a book my friend sent me for Christmas last December. It isn't just an ordinary book... it's a signed copy of Lemony Snicket's The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming!
I never got a chance to sit down and read it until today. I remember loving Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events until the Baudelaires' plot line got a bit repetitive from the 7th book and on. However, I don't think I ever took the chance to appreciate the syntax of the written word when I was in elementary school. Reading this children's book now has made me realized just how rich Snicket's writing is.
I love how Lemony Snicket knows his audience. He knows he is writing a children's book; he knows the value of passing on knowledge and learning to these children. It shows as he seemingly breaks the fourth wall in literature by defining the difficult vocabulary he incorporates into his writing. Granted the book is about screaming latke, but it also opens the reader's eyes about Hanukkah and Jewish traditions despite the predominant Christmas festivities during the holiday season.
This book is short and sweet, humorous as always (come on, this is Lemony Snicket we're talking about. He's hilarious). Thanks, Nathan, for giving me this very educational read :)
